Unclaimed money, sometimes called abandoned and more correctly, unclaimed property, refers to forgotten money or items of individuals that were held by companies and financial institutions. Once an individual’s account has no activity for one year or longer, companies are required to turn the unclaimed money over to the state who will make an effort to match the unclaimed funds with the owner or the owner’s heirs.

Common forms of unclaimed money include:

  • Savings or checking accounts
  • Stocks
  • Uncashed dividends or payroll checks
  • Refunds
  • Traveler's checks
  • Trust distributions
  • Unredeemed money orders or gift certificates
  • Insurance payments or refunds
  • Life insurance policies
  • Annuities
  • Certificates of deposit
  • Customer overpayments
  • Utility security deposits
  • Mineral royalty payments
  • Safe deposit box contents

To begin the search for your unclaimed money, visit MissingMoney.com. This website is officially endorsed by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) and contains the official unclaimed property records from most state unclaimed property programs. Searching is free!

You can also contact the states' unclaimed property units directly.

Thanks. I've known about this site (or similar) but never found anything. Today I found my mother-in-law and probably my grandmother.

Several years ago, a guy at work said to me, "Hey, you know we're renting the house you used to and keep getting all this junk mail for you. We usually just throw it away. There's one from the Treasury Department. Do you want it?" Whatever--I'll have a look. Wow, I'd forgotten about that $5,000 corporate bond! It had matured a few years earlier and the State was making their last effort to contact me. "If you don't reply within 10 days...." I had less than a week!

I check the site once in a while. Won't get rich but I did find $.09 from an old savings account.
