Dogs
Dogs are great family pets because they are very loving. You will find that one of the best breeds for kids is a Beagle. This is because they are not temperamental and get along well with children. They also provide an unconditional love. Their size ranges usually between 13 and 16 inches. You will find that they will even make a great watch dog!
Beagles can be either indoor or outdoor dogs. This makes them very versatile for any home. Also, you will find that they are not expensive to care for. This makes them just about a perfect match for families with children. You should always take extra care to ensure that you are getting one from a legitimate breeder. You can do this by checking out their registration.
Fish
Fish can be a great idea for a pet if you want something that does not require a lot of upkeep. There are many different types to choose from, which makes shopping for them fun and exciting for kids. The downfall is that most fish require a sizable tank with a filter, which can be quite pricey. Not only do fish provide relaxation, but they are also fun to watch.
Hamsters, Gerbils and Such
Rodents can be a very inexpensive choice when it comes to pets for children. Where you will spend the most of your money is for their accessories. A cage, food, wheels, and other toys can become pricey. Kids can have a ton of fun with these little critters, but unfortunately they do not live very long. Maintenance is generally not a big deal, other than cleaning the cage on a regular basis.
Just a reminder, gerbils have a tendency to bite. Providing crunchy veggies for them to snack on is a good way to make sure that they channel this into a positive direction.
Birds
There are a few different types of birds that make great pets for kids. The parrot is one of them. They are not only fun to play with, but they can also learn to speak. This can provide a lot of enjoyment for the children.
The thing that you will want to remember when it comes to parrots is the fact that you have to be very careful when you purchase one. There are many illegal activities going on with the sale of parrots. Ensure that you are getting one from a well reputable source.
The one downfall to this type of pet: price. When you have a parrot, you will not only need to have a large cage for them, but you will also need to provide them with toys. Birds get bored easily, and you must have things to entertain him.
There are many different cats available at your local pet shelters. When you get a young kitten, you will have to deal with training them to behave indoors. When you get a cat that is older, you will need to make sure that you know about their temperament. Usually, cats are a great choice for kids because they love to be playful.
Keep in mind that sometimes children are allergic to cats and their dander. You will want to know this ahead of time.
As you can see, choosing a pet for your child can be a fun and exciting time. You will first need to make sure that your child understands that pets are not only just fun, but they are also a lot of responsibility. Kids also have to know how to handle the pets properly to ensure the safety of themselves and the pet.

Great hub! If I can suggest, based on experience, rats are better pets for kids than hamsters or gerbils. Rats are far less likely to bite and bond with their owners, much more so than other popular rodents. I know, rats have a "reputation", but aside from that, they are actually safer and more fun for kids.
