Baby Jacket, No. 1. Materials required are two and one-half ounces of white Shetland floss, a small quantity of white artificial silk for edging, and a medium-sized celluloid crochet- hook.

Make a chain of 72 stitches for the bottom of back of yoke.

1. Miss 3, a tr in each of 69 st.

2. A tr in each tr (ch 3 for 1st).

3 to 12. Like 2d row.

13. A tr in each of 26 st, for shoulder.

14 to 23. Tr in each tr, increasing at the neck edge, each row, by working 2 tr in same st.

24, 25. A tr in each of 36 tr. Fasten off.

Work the other half of yoke to correspond with first, missing 18 trebles for back of neck.

With the wrong side of work toward you, make a row of spaces around bottom of yoke, thus:

1. Fasten in 1st tr of front, ch 5, * miss 2, a tr in next, ch 2, repeat, ending with tr in last tr.

2. In each sp work 1 tr, 3 ch and 1 tr.

3. Under each 8 ch work 1 tr, 3 ch and 1 tr. Chain 6 to begin for the 1st tr and 3 ch.

Repeat 2d and 3d rows 14 times more and fasten off.

Sleeves: Beginning at 2d row from bottom of yoke, or 23d row, work 2 trebles in the side of each treble, or 46 trebles in all; work 1 row of 46 trebles on these, then work 2 rows more, decreasing 1 at each end of row. Work 9 rows on 42 trebles, then work a row of spaces and 2 rows, like 2d and 3d rows of the body of the jacket.

For the edge: Work around sleeves, bottom, fronts and neck as follows: Three trebles under 1st 3 chain, * chain 1, a double under next 3 chain, chain 1, 3 trebles under next; repeat. Along back of neck work 3 trebles in treble, chain 1, miss 1 treble, a double in next, chain 1, miss 1 and repeat.

To make the cord for the waist, crochet a chain 38 inches long, using the wool double; thread this through the row of spaces, finishing each end with a tassel made by winding the wool 20 times, singly, around 3 fingers. Make the cord for wrists in the same way, 15 inches long, thread through the spaces, and finish with tassels made by winding wool 12 times around 2 fingers. Sew up the sleeve-seams neatly.

Baby Jacket. No. 2. Materials required are two ounces of two-ply fingering-yarn, a small quantity of artificial silk for edging, two yards of ribbon, one fourth inch wide, and a bone crochet-hook, medium size.

Work the yoke exactly as directed for baby jacket, No. 1, until you have completed the row of spaces at bottom of yoke. Then for the body, work as follows:

1. Three tr in 1st sp (always remembering that ch 3 stands for 1st tr of row), ch 3, a d c in same sp; repeat.

2. Three tr under last 3 ch, ch 3, a d c under same chain; repeat, working under each 3 ch of the row.

Repeat the 2d row 20 times and fasten off. With the silk, work a row like 2d row, and fasten off.

For the sleeves: Beginning at bottom of yoke, work 2 trebles in the side of each treble, 50 trebles in all; work 4 rows more, decreasing 1 stitch at beginning of each row, and 10 rows without decreasing. Make the row of spaces, then work a row like 1st row of body of jacket and fasten off.

For the neck, fasten in with the silk at bottom of front of yoke, work 3 trebles, chain 3 and 1 double on the side of 1st treble, miss 1 treble, and repeat, working 4 groups of trebles across back of neck.

Sew up the sleeves, and thread the ribbon through the spaces at waist and wrists.
