How many times have you gone to the grocery store, only to see a child yelling or running around with the mother trying to get them under control? Good manners are important, you already know this. But does it just stop with saying “Please” and “Thank you”?

What Does Good Manners Display

When a child shows good manners, it means they understand respect. If a child is telling someone “please” and “thank you”, it means they’re showing manners. When a child does not interrupt two people talking, they’re showing both respect and good manners. That means the child understands not to ask a question until the adults are done talking, which means the parents are teaching the child proper manners.

What other basic manner skills should a child know?

- Greet people when meeting them
- Look people in the eye when being talked to
- Let guests go first, regardless of where it’s at
- Don’t arrive late
- Share with others
- Assist people when able

Why Good Manners Are So Important

Children who have manners and use them are well-liked more than those children who don’t use them. Of course, children very young do not see this as a motivator but older children might. Children have a desire to be liked like adults and teenagers do. As children grow up, they learn to use their good manners to leave a great impression. With their good manners, they show others how to act and teach their friends how they can be polite too.

If your child is going to have manners, you need to have manners yourself. Remember, your child will learn by what you do. Thus, you need to be polite yourself in conversation and treat people with respect. It all boils down to this old saying: practice what you preach and they’re likely to start mimicking you.

Why Children Fail To Have Good Manners Today

Why is it that children don’t have good manners anymore? The reason is that society doesn’t require good manners as much. In television and movies, children are seen as disrespectful and ill-mannered toward their parents, peers and people who are in position of authority. Children who are allowed to watch these kinds of shows will mimic them.

Parents need to remind children to treat others as they want to be treated. If they wish to have friends, they need to be friendly. If they want to be treated with respect, they need to treat others with respect. They need to take others’ feelings into consideration and hope they do the same for them. Your children will need to begin this trend to show others how they would like to be treated. They can be a real influence on both children and adults they come into contact with.

It’s not hard to teach your child good manners. They learn by watching the people in their lives, both adults and children who are using their good manners and treating people with respect. When you understand why children need good manners, then it makes it all the more important to train them so you both reap the benefits.
