Portable generators can prove to be very handy when the power goes out, but they can also be very dangerous if not used carefully. You will want to watch out for carbon monoxide exposure, electrical shocks, and fires. The USFA, or the United States Fire Administration, has made it very obvious that there are some precautions that can be taken to ensure that you are safe when using these portable generators.

Avoiding Exposure to Carbon Monoxide:

First of all, you will want to make sure that the generator is used outdoors only. You should not put it near your windows or doors. You will also want to make sure that it is in an open space. If you put it in the garage, it can be very dangerous- even if the door is up. You will need to make sure it has proper ventilation. You will also want to follow any and all instructions that come with the device. By using CO alarms, you can ensure that you are kept safe against it. Test your alarms often to check their functionality.

Avoiding Electrical Shock and Hazard:

You will want to make sure that you keep the device dry and free from all moisture. You will also want to make sure that you have dry hands before handling it. When you are plugging things into the device, you will want to make sure that you use an outdoor rated cord that does not have any sort of cuts or tears. Look for cords that have three prongs instead of two. They are safer. You will never want to plug the generator into your wall outlet. This can cause severe electric shock and is called backfeeding. If you have to use the generator for any special uses that require you to connect it to the home wiring, you will want to make sure it is done by a professional.

Avoiding Fires:

Make sure that you are letting the engine cool down before you try to refuel the device. If you refuel it while it is hot, you may start a fire. You will also want to make sure that you keep the fuel in a safe place away from anything that may catch on fire. Label it clearly for others to know that it is fuel.
