Ideas To Make Your Crafting Easier!

  1. An easy way to thread a machine needle is to not look for the eye, but sit right in front, put the thread above the eye in the groove, slant downward, and when the thread hits the eye it will go through. It can be threaded this way at arm's length, if you can see the needle.
  2. If you want to thread a needle with yarn, and find it rather difficult to do so, just take a piece of ordinary thread, put it around the yarn, and pass both ends of the thread through the needle, pulling the yarn through with them. It is much easier than trying to double the yarn and work the doubled end through the eye.
  3. Put on hooks and eyes with buttonhole-stitch; they will not come off and the work is neater.
  4. If your sewing machine skips stitches, try loosening the screw that holds the needle in place, let the needle drop down a little, and tighten up again.
  5. When making baby's every day dresses, use two or three thicknesses of the material for the yoke. The little garment will last much longer, as the yoke receives most of the wear and tear in the laundry.
  6. Instead of braiding rags for a rug, try crocheting them into a chain, using a large crochet hook; then sew them as you would if braided. The effect is pretty much the same, the rug is very pretty, and the work accomplished much more quickly.
  7. You can use old stockings for rag rugs; rip the hem at the top of the leg, and start with a point, cutting around and around the leg and making a continuous strip. Cut the strips of uniform width, one to one and half inches, according to the thickness of the stocking. Cut off the points, stitch the ends together and crochet them into rugs.
  8. To make French knots, instead of winding the thread around the needle as is usual, bring the needle up through the cloth where the knot is to be made, take a tiny stitch in the cloth, throw the thread over as if to form a buttonhole, draw up and repeat. Usually two stitches are enough. These knots keep in place and are very quickly and easily made.
