Financial Planning Following Divorce

There are many affects of divorce that can cause quite an impact on people’s lives. First of all, it is a loss of a significant other. Next, it is going to result in a decrease in income. For those that were married for a while, getting used to having two incomes in the home is a very easy thing to do. When you go down to one income, it can be tough to make ends meet. The first thing that you must do is take a look at everything that you will have to pay each month, including grocery and gas costs.

You will want to start cutting back on your expenses any way that you can. The first thing that you can do is take a look at a smaller place to live. Sometimes you can find an apartment that will not cost as much as where you live now. Other times, you may be able to refinance your home loan in order to bring your payments down to something that you can afford on your own.

Another thing that you can do is bring down your bills to their bare minimum. Usually if you do this for a year or so, you will be able to build your finances back up so that you can add the extras back in here and there. Some of the easiest bills to cut back on are your cable and cell phone bills. This is because most of the time, all the added channels and minutes to the plans that we choose are not really a necessity.

When it comes to shopping for groceries, you will find that it can be a little tough at first. You are likely used to shopping for you and your spouse. Learning how to buy in smaller packages is one of the best ways to not only save money, but also ensure that you do not get more than you will be able to eat. You can also clip coupons and use them on your grocery purchases to save a little more money here and there.

Once you try out these tips, you will likely see that it saves you a decent chunk of change every month. For some, it is still not enough to make the ends meet. For those, it may be necessary to pick up an extra part time job here and there. If you cannot seem to fit another job into your schedule, you may want to look into picking up some freelance work on the side from home. This is especially great for those that have kids and cannot afford a babysitter.

As you can see, many changes take place when you get a divorce. That being said, you can ensure that your pocketbook stays intact by following these few simple steps to cut down on your cost. It will save you a lot of grief and heart ache in the long run if you do.

Good advice Scoobydeb. Going solo requires a fair bit of adjusting. I found a good way to save a little bit on electricity bills was to turn everything off at the power point as most appliances have stand-by mode that still suck power.
