Planning a funeral is a difficult time for everyone involved. It is likely not something that we look forward to, but it should be considered ahead of time. Losing a loved one is a very sad time in a person’s life. When you plan ahead you will be able to make the best decisions and save money when the time comes to have a funeral.

Death is a scary thing, and many people do not even like talking about it. In a situation where someone is really sick for a while, then you may find that planning the arrangements ahead of time is a good idea. But what about those times that you are not aware of what will soon happen? Sometimes, death strikes out of the middle of nowhere with no warning. In times like these, it is a little more difficult to make good decisions in a split second.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when you have to plan a funeral that is unexpected. This will also give you an idea as to how much you will have to spend on the funeral costs.

1- You will need to meet with a funeral director at a local funeral home. They are trained to be able to help you in your time of need and sorrow. They will also be able to explain to you how everything works. From getting the body ready, to the visitation, to the service and burial (or cremation) - they will discuss everything with you. You will find that once you know what is going to happen, it gets a little bit easier to accept.

2- You will also need to determine the companies that you will use during the funeral process. You may think that it is all just a one stop shop, and sometimes it can be. But, you do have options. You can go with completely different companies for each aspect of the funeral- from the flowers to the headstone.

3- Choose how you want your loved one to be buried. This includes choosing a casket for burial, or choosing cremation. Not everyone has the luxury of knowing what their loved one would have wanted. In this case, it is up to the closest family members to decide for them.

4- Find out about any sort of discounts that you may be entitled to. There are many discounts offered- both through life insurance policies and military service member discounts. These are both a great way to save a bit of money on the overall cost of the funeral service.

5- Gather pictures of your loved one to use as a memorial before the funeral service. It will bring back the memories of the good times that the family and friends had with the deceased. This is always a good way to show respect and memory to a loved one. It will also save money on having a viewing, since these can be quite costly.

6- Try having a gathering after the funeral at your church or a friend’s home.
This is a great way to save money instead of just hanging around the funeral home to chit chat with your friends and family that have come to pay their respects to your loved one.

As you can see, planning a funeral does not have to be terribly expensive. There are many ways to cut corners so that you can get a great service at a fraction of the cost.

Be very aware when you are shopping for funeral costs. Don't be talked into services that you don't need or that aren't necessary.
