Create a Budget

First of all, congrats for taking the big step and getting married! It is a blessing to be able to find the one that you love and want to spend the rest of your life with. Once you get home and get settled into your new life as husband and wife, you will want to think about ways that you can merge your finances in order to have a successful happy marriage. Preparing yourselves for anything that may come your way is always a good idea.

The first thing that you will want to do is put together a budget. Take a look at the different things that you have to pay each month along with the amount of income that you have coming in between the two of you. The good news is that where you were used on only one income, you will now have both of yours to rely on to cover the bills each month.

If you find that you have a lot of debt, you will want to find ways to pay off the debt quickly so that you can start over fresh together. Credit cards are one of the most common debts that people have when they first get married. This is because many of the people out there have billed portions of the wedding and the honeymoon to their cards. This should be paid off as soon as possible. Never make only the minimum payments, as this is not the best way to pay things off quickly to avoid a lot of high interest payments and finance charges.

Open up a savings account. By doing this, you can put extra income each month into it and start to build up a savings that you can use in the case of an emergency. Finding one with a high interest rate is a great way to make the most of your money that you put into a savings account. When you have a substantial amount saved up, you will be able to cover your expenses if something comes along that is unexpected.

Anytime that you want to make a big ticket purchase, such as a new TV or new exercise equipment, you will want to use cash to pay for it. By paying with cash or debit, and not using credit, you will avoid the expenses that can come later from late fees and other charges that will be billed to you when you use a credit card. It will also keep you more mindful of the money that you spend together.

Anytime two people get married, it is likely that there will be some issues when it comes to the finances at first. This is because you will have to get accustomed to working together on the bills and the budget. This is quite the adjustment for most people. When you put together a budget and stick with it and follow these guidelines, you will be on your way to having a debt free happy life together.
