Downsize Your Home

During times of economic downfall, you will see that most people are having to make some sort of changes with their life in order to keep up their finances. When you lower your cost of living, you will see that it is easier to get by in times of economic distress. People are even turning to downsizing their home in order to save money.

Many people, especially those with children who have gone away to college, find that they do not need all of the room that they have in their home. These are the people who could really benefit from getting a smaller house. Before you make the move to a smaller house, you should really take the time to think about a few things.

First of all, you will want to look into the area that you will be moving. You need to see if you are going to be able to save any money. When it comes to paying property taxes, if you stay in the same area you are likely to not have any sort of savings on the property tax.

Another thing to consider is the housing market in your area. For most buyers, it is a great market. You will be able to find a smaller home with great amenities. You can still enjoy the luxuries of great features such as walk in closets, large kitchen areas, and a nice sized yard. With the market being the way it is, it is a great time to get a nice home for a small price.

You should also take a look at the bottom line savings each month. You can do this easily by calculating what your new payment will be if you get a smaller home, verses what your payment is on your old home. Chances are you will save a lot more money just on the interest if nothing else. This will leave you with more disposable income at the end of the month.

Another big advantage to downsizing and moving to an apartment or condo is the fact that you will be able to have fewer responsibilities. Often times, lawn care and general maintenance are included with the price you pay for it. This can be a huge help in and of itself.

Before looking into buying a new home, you should really think hard about the possibilities of selling your existing home. With it being a buyer’s market, it is a little difficult to sell these days and actually make a profit off of the home. You should be able to get the most out of your home if it has been well kept.

Another big advantage that a lot of people do not consider is the fact that with a smaller home comes a smaller utility bill. This can lead to more money being saved. When you save more money, you can think of other ways to use it such as making investments.

As you can see, downsizing your home comes with a lot of advantages. It is not something that should be taken lightly though. You should think about every aspect of it before you toss your home on the market and set out to look for a new smaller home.

You make some good points, something to surely consider as kids leave the nest etc. Not sure what to do with this big ol house when its nearly empty. Maybe I'll adopt. Then again I would be happy in a camp trailer on 10 acres ha ha.

We downsized last year and the money saved is significant. Saving money was not the prime motive, we just wanted a smaller space less maintenanace.
